Off subject but evidently received some kind of virus where my computer wants to use a different home page and has other problems too. When I run Spybot search and destroy, "Error during check! Zwax(Ungulfiger Datentyp fur") URLSearchHook Atlpz" comes up on the list of problems found and I cannot get rid of it. What web sight can I go to to guide me in eliminating this? THANKS so much for any help

I set up my laptop to use a home network connection. I had firmware and software firewalls in place. so I didn't worry.

While on vacation, I plugged in to a hotel broadband connection. I ended up FDisk'ing.

I would try to install and run Microsoft Spyware Beta before I started manually digging into the Registry Keys. Its a free download on C-Net.

If that doesn't clean it up, then you should try the registry.

Make sure you back up your data to a removable disc.

At worse you'll have to Fdisk. And you'll have your files.

Good luck!!

Beyond running adware, spybot, and spysweeper (have to pay) I've noticed that when you go to your internet explorer options, click on programs tab, then manage Add-ons, if you see something that you can't identify, wipe it out. Sometimes that helps, but usually the spyware is embedded in more than one way.

I don't see "manage Add-ons" on i.e.options programs tab or anywhere else. Where is it?

Should be the third item down once you click "Tools". No need to go into "Options" (IE6). (nt), posted on April 28, 2005 at 08:30:03

Under "Tools": Mail and News, Synchronize, Windows Update, Show Related Links, Reset Web Settings, Internet Options (nothing else)

Sounds like you might be using earlier versions, in which case you should update, but...

Anyway, a good site is: http://www.annoyances.org/, but you'll need to put up with a little geekiness!

Delete the registry key for IE and reinstall it...., posted on April 28, 2005 at 06:31:58

Assuming you're using IE. Those gremlims usually live in the registry, which is why merely reinstalling the browser won't work. If you delete that key (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE|Software|Microsoft|Internet Explorer) and reinstall, you'll wipe out the gremlins.

It's inconvenient, because many web sites will not display properly with this setting, but if you set your browser's Internet security settings to 'High', this crap doesn't happen.

Will set my internet security to high but please explain how I can do exactly what you said. I can repair electronics but don't know very much about this. Specifically, how do I delete it and what do I do to reinstall it. I have the discs that came with my computer. THANKS for your help...

You may want to get someone to help you if possible. None of this is very hard to do, but it is hard to anticipate in advance every situation/choice you may encounter along the way and prep you to deal with it.

In essence, you just have to open the registry by typing 'regedit' (without the single quotes) into the Run command in the Start menu. It will look much like Windows Explorer when it opens. Work your way down to the key (folder) I mentioned, and delete it.

Depending on what you have for software that came with your computer, you may be able to find a setup program specifically for IE. If not, then the easiest way to repair/reinstall IE will be to reinstall Windows (of course, I'm assuming you're running IE on Windows). This will essentially restore the IE registry key. You will not have to reinstall any of your programs as long as you reinstall Windows to the same folder it's currently installed.

Like I said, none of this is hard to do, but you will likely be presented with choices along the way and may not know how to make the correct choice. Given that you'll only be performing a reinstall, however, chances are you could just click Next thru the whole precess and be successful.

Best of luck,
Pete

BACK UP YOUR DATA!!

Open My Computer. Right click on 'C' drive.

Choose the format option.

Follow the prompts.

You will have to partition your harddrive, install your operating system, all your hardware, all your software. And restore your data.

I do this at least once a year. It keeps the registry from becoming too cluttered so things will run smoother.

If the machine worked properly a few days ago and you have Windows 2000 or XP, run the System Restore Wizard and pick a restore point from before the problem started. This will get you a usable registry, no registry hacking required. Programs installed since that restore point may not work. If not, they need to be re-installed.

If you are running Spybot, it makes a System Restore Point before doing any corrections.
