If the machine worked properly a few days ago and you have Windows 2000 or XP, run the System Restore Wizard and pick a restore point from before the problem started. This will get you a usable registry, no registry hacking required. Programs installed since that restore point may not work. If not, they need to be re-installed.If you are running Spybot, it makes a System Restore Point before doing any corrections.
