I'm 80% reds in my drinking. But I've noticed alot of other wine drinkers turn their noses up at whites. When I mention that some of the greatest wines I've ever had were whites, they are astounded. By the way, most of these people think I'm a wine expert/snob.Haut Brion Blanc. Forget the vintage but remember tasting it and walking to the back of the store and still tasting it.
German Eiswein. Once again I was in college, working a wine tasting for the store and they poured this. Not sure of the vineyard or the vintage, but we were serving our finest customers. Every sip was a new taste explosion.

Don't remember the vintages: it's been a while.

one of the more memorable whites was a '97 pinot grigo from fruili , but I can't recall the vintner. I think the name of the place was Al Volto, an historic little enoteca in Venice, back on a side street off san marco. the place was a millenea old probably, and had a huge storehouse of wines. the guy at the bar recommended this wine. it was very nice.another - how about a nice Le Rêve from Domain Carneros.. this one too is one where the setting plays into it. at the big, french-looking, chateau hillside winery, sitting on their patio, looking out over the vines, the place is hard to beat for USA wine tasting. here's the story on their Le Rêve ...
"...Our 1999 Le Rêve is the eighth in a highly distinguished line of Blanc de Blancs. Its predecessors have repeatedly been rated "the best Sparkling Wine in America" (rated 93 to 95 points). This current release is a great successor to these wines and exemplifies the best of our estate-grown chardonnay.
This 100% chardonnay sparkling wine is seductively luscious, with an elegant structure that is enhanced with layers of citrus, passion fruit and pineapple. Floral notes such as freesias and honeysuckle blend with the wine’s honey, toasty character. Creamy elements wind through the lingering silky finish and texture.
The blend of the 1998 Le Rêve is 100% chardonnay selected from six different estate-grown clones. It has been aged on the lees in the bottle for six years. The appellation is 100% Carneros, 100% from the 1999 vintage and 100% estate grown. It is drinking beautifully now but will continue to age and develop for many years...."

I remember when I used to work at the wine store that people would come in all excited and ask for a wine, something like Ch. Cadillac, that they had on there trip to France. They always said "It is the greatest wine I've ever had".
We'd sell them a bottle knowing that the next time they came in they would say " Something must of happened to it during the shipping".
Then we'd ask "Where did you have it over in France?"
"Oh, it was a beautiful night at a charming restaurant overlooking the most gorgeous river. It was our favorite part of the trip."
yeah, it's tough to reproduce a really special event like venice, but I can drive over to Carneros in an hour just about any time and that Le Reve will be there and be good! if only I could get to Venice that easily.

Hopefully the couple seconds out of the cellar won't hurt any...Please pardon the mess - our medium cellar also shares space in our storage room :)

...I fondly remember the 1979 Grgich Hills chardonnay. Another memorable one was a Montrachet I had in 1985 (don't recall which).I love red (mainly zinfandel) but my wife drinks whites. There are plenty of excellent chardonnays. My current favorites are from Rombauer, Landmark Overlook and Newton Unfiltered, but they vary year to year.

I must say that a nice bottle of Gava from spain is always a great one for an evening. I'm a mainly red guy myself, but gava is also my fav. these days.

You've probably (hopefully) had a few reds that just took your senses away. Have you ever had any whites that did the same?

Still saving it for a special celebration.

1 x '76 Climens
1 x '76 deFargues1 '82 LaTour

Just kidding...That's the kind of wine that makes an occassion special.
But it is such a shame when people hold onto wine so long that it goes bad (not in your case) or when they finally have it, it doesn't live up to their long awaited expectations.
Enjoy it sooner than later.
Funny thing about wine, they keep on making more.
And there always seems to be a new "vintage of the century".
