Even some from California - decent cabs, syrahs and blends can go about 5 years, zinfandels around 3 and even pinot noirs and chardonnays for a year or two.
I would suggest subscribing to Wine Spectator.

My advice is different. Find a wine store you trust. Even better find a sales rep at that store you trust even more. Someone who has been around a while, tasted a lot of wine. Someone who gives you some recommendations you agree with.
Then ask him or her. Spread out your risk. Don't buy all CA Cabs or French Burgundies. Mix it up. The style of the wine will dictate how long it lasts. Ask questions.
Have fun and don't get caught up in all the crap. I don't really think the magazines are much help but that's just me.
