Wine cellar

Our new house came with a 640-bottle basement wine cellar. I'm pretty much a three-buck chuck kind of guy, but the SO tends to like nice wines. So, without breaking the bank, if we were to start putting a few bottles away every now and then to have on hand for company, what would you folks suggest?

If you are a Costco member check out
the wines they offer. The Kirkland
wines are a good value. Also, when
you buy wines for the cellar buy a
mixed case as you get 10% off.

...I see you are on the East Coast so there are many French and Italian wines available that would be good for cellaring for a few years.

Even some from California - decent cabs, syrahs and blends can go about 5 years, zinfandels around 3 and even pinot noirs and chardonnays for a year or two.

I would suggest subscribing to Wine Spectator.

  My advice is different. Find a wine store you trust. Even better find a sales rep at that store you trust even more. Someone who has been around a while, tasted a lot of wine. Someone who gives you some recommendations you agree with.
  
  Then ask him or her. Spread out your risk. Don't buy all CA Cabs or French Burgundies. Mix it up. The style of the wine will dictate how long it lasts. Ask questions.
  
  Have fun and don't get caught up in all the crap. I don't really think the magazines are much help but that's just me.
