...I seldom drink merlot.Perhaps it's because I remember when it just used to be used as a blending wine to soften cabernets - most I find are uninteresting and lack a nice finish.
Or maybe it's because of "Sideways".
I much prefer zinfandel, pinot noir or cabernet.
But I was at a hotel bar in SF last weekend and asked the bartender which of the reds he recommended.
He said the 2012 Whitehall Lane merlot was his favorite.
I was given tastes of a half dozen reds they pour by the glass and this was by far the best - nice fruit with a good balance and I'd probably not have guessed it was a merlot.
Priced at $28 but it can be found in the low $20 range.
Recommended - check it out.

Wasn't it a bottle of Cheval Blanc that Paul Giamatti's character was drinking in the closet at the end of that movie (Merlot/Cab Fanc blend?)
Merlot's grown around here (Washington state) are often bigger than cabs. Of course it depends where the fruit is grown, but they have muscle, intensity, and character. It really can be an amazing wine.
I try not to preach too much, but I do believe that WA is one of the greatest places in the world to grown and make merlot. And the pendulum is starting to swing back....I tried to make enough this year to do a small tasting room only Merlot to see how it goes.

Steve, I saw a Gordon Brothers Merlot at Costco for $20.
Is it worth a try, I drink very few Merlot's.

Sorry Jerry I don't know anything about it. I don't think I've ever had any of the wines form them.

I just checked the Costco Wine Blog and
I will try it although I rarely drink Merlot's.
...when my daughter was going to Gonzaga we would go wine tasting in Spokane during the day when we were up there for basketball games.
We found some terrific merlots from the Walla Walla area - seems like they grow better there than in CA.
I have had some good CA merlots from Pride and Duckhorn but they were over $50 a bottle.
We also found some nice WA sangiovese up there.
I think the current WS has a feature article about WA wines.
Whitehall Lane does make a good one. I also used to enjoy Markham for the bang for the buck. But the last couple of vintages I've had have been a bit mediocre. You're right on the Cheval Blanc in the movie. They originally approached Petrus but were turned down because Petrus people thought the movie idea was lame. That would have been the ultimate twist because Petrus is considered the greatest merlot in the world.
Just had a bottle of Seven Hills merlot with dinner tonight.
