Red wine recommendation...

Perhaps it's because I remember when it just used to be used as a blending wine to soften cabernets - most I find are uninteresting and lack a nice finish.

Or maybe it's because of "Sideways".

I much prefer zinfandel, pinot noir or cabernet.

But I was at a hotel bar in SF last weekend and asked the bartender which of the reds he recommended.

He said the 2012 Whitehall Lane merlot was his favorite.

I was given tastes of a half dozen reds they pour by the glass and this was by far the best - nice fruit with a good balance and I'd probably not have guessed it was a merlot.

Priced at $28 but it can be found in the low $20 range.
