...I don't care for them, but a couple in our group wanted to taste them.
Too big, dense and heavy for me.
Usually we have snacks while we taste - maybe some bread and cheese. For these we had to have meat - thin sliced proscuitto and ham, along with cheese, bread and some dark chocolate
Anyway 6 of us tasted 5 of the 2009s, some from big names like Ridge and Turley.
The winner and favorite by a large margin was from Cypher in Paso Robles who recently took over Four Vines.
If you like them, check this one out.
Follow Ups:
I've belonged to Four Vines wine club for about five years now. When they sold out I was switched to Cypher.
I'm not a big fan of Rhone style wines which is what Cypher does.
But my last club shipment included a Mourvedre which was surprisingly really good. I was thinking of cancelling my membership, but I think I'll hold off for a bit.
What was the name of the wine you tried? They usually name their wines.

I agree with you, petite sirah tends to be heavy and usually one-dimensional. Purple wine that stains your teeth and tongue.
But I do like it when I'm looking for a brooding wine.
...a syrah.
Or a zinfandel, which will make you feel better.
love a good zin.
Still has to be a really good syrah to catch my fancy. I think the syrah was the "next big" red that didn't make it. Lots of syrah sitting in the wineries.
I like a good petite sirah, as long as it doesn't cost more than $25. Even better when it doesn't cost more than $20.
I get my allotment offering from Turley for $48 petite sirahs. Never going to happen.
One of my all time favourites is a Californian called Sixth Sense.Jam packed with fruit and less than $20.
...California wines are "jam" packed with fruit and lack real complexity, balance and interest.
"Fruit bombs" they are called.
At one winery tasting someone remarked the zinfandel tasted like a Fruit-Roll-Up - that isn't a compliment.
I Googled 6th Sense and it's a Syrah made by Michael David, the Lodi winery which makes 7 Deadly Zins.
I'll have to check it out.
Their zin is not bad for an inexpensive restaurant by the glass pour where I usually see it.
Why are you telling people what they should like?
If they like fruit bombs, white zinfandels, pinot grigio, etc....
So be it.
It's their money and the wineries profit.
...I tell anyone what they should like.
I gave my opinion.
Your mileage may vary...
