I'd love some input on recommended Red wines under $28.00 per bottle. I prefer Chianti's, Pinot Noir's and Merlot's, Italian is my favorite. Any and all suggestions appreciated. Thanks,
Ben

You could get alot for $28. For merlots $28 would include the likes of Ferrari-Carrano, Silverado, Joseph Phelps Napa, and Venge. While you're plunking down that kind of cash for a merlot, you should really explore cabernets or even meritages/clarets. Saddleback Cellars, Newlan Vineyards, Beringer Alluvium Red, and BV's tapestry are usually good bets. As for a recommendation on pinots for that price, I'd would urge you to buy a set of Riedel Sommelier Burgundy glasses. They take any decent $10 - $20 pinot (e.g. Echelon, Schug) and make them taste as if they should be much more expensive. Yes, the glasses are expensive, but you would make up the cost in no time with the satisfaction you would derive. The difference is dramatic.Cheers!
There is a fabulous cabernet sauvignon produced in Chile by Los Vascos. It's now part of the Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite)...which expectedly has high standards. The grande reserve is worth it. It costs about 21 guilders, which translates to about 14 dollars I think. Anyhow, if you can find it, SAVOUR it. I really like the flavours of Chianti Classicos, and Cote du Rhone...if this is similar to your views, try and find a bottle :-)
Ben,
What is your aim for this wine?
I love Italian reds too, some to drink now, some to keep a while and some just to quaf! Some from areas like, the Piedemont some, as your Chianti, from Tuscany and some from Umbria.
Is your budget for one bottle?

I bought a case of Nugola Vecchia It's a Tuscan and made of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Merlot from my local Trader Joe's at $5.99/
bottle they are superb. And another one is DIevole Chianti.
Thanks for the recommendations, I live near a Trader Joe's and will give them a shot. Thanks,
Ben
