You could get alot for $28. For merlots $28 would include the likes of Ferrari-Carrano, Silverado, Joseph Phelps Napa, and Venge. While you're plunking down that kind of cash for a merlot, you should really explore cabernets or even meritages/clarets. Saddleback Cellars, Newlan Vineyards, Beringer Alluvium Red, and BV's tapestry are usually good bets. As for a recommendation on pinots for that price, I'd would urge you to buy a set of Riedel Sommelier Burgundy glasses. They take any decent $10 - $20 pinot (e.g. Echelon, Schug) and make them taste as if they should be much more expensive. Yes, the glasses are expensive, but you would make up the cost in no time with the satisfaction you would derive. The difference is dramatic.

Cheers!
