There's a mystery here about Kay Bixler and I can't get any of the details straight nor can any of the other Asylum members. The only thing that seems clear is that Kay will no longer be contributing here. Hopefully, we will all know more in the weeks and months to come. There are wines to be consumed, cooling units to be bought and installed, Eden's and Brad's regular articles to be read and digested, Jeebus' to attend and chronicle, and all sorts of other nonsense that is of compelling interest to Asylum members.
Onward and upward.
Follow Ups:
sort of like Waiting for Guffman. I am eagerly awaiting the Pinot Noir expose.
All we hear about this pinot exposé is "It's coming, you'll see it soon."I'm beginning to wonder if the lad is serious about his new career as a wacky internet wine personality.
As I recall, Brad was angry that everyone here was calling him Brother Brad Kane.Or was it that everyone was refusing to call him Brother Brad Kane?
Anyhow, if you post on Mark Squire's board you are treated with genuine respect and everyone calls you brother. There do not appear to be any sisters.
I don't really recall the dispute, but I do remember there was a lot of bargaining before he finally accepted the position of Wine Asylum East Coast Correspondent.I think the opportunity to have a platform to vent his iconoclastic notions about pinot noir was irresistible to him, though. It seems a natural step in his burgeoning career as a wacky internet wine character.
Is 'Mark Sguires board' a board with a monastic slant, by any chance?
As far as I know, the Mark Squires board is non-denominational, and open to wine loving brethren of all races, sexes, sexuality, ages, etc. I suppose though that it is advisable to be a man if you want to be know as 'Brother' like the rest of the posters. We have the same non-discriminatory, non-denominational policy here at the Asylum, I think.I guess every board has its idiosynchracies. The Squire board has 'brothers,' the West Coast Board has 'mailing lists,' the Garr board has 'Thors,' Strat's Place has Geo T's Floral arrangements, and we have our Jeebus. You know Chris, a lot of people intensely dislike the term Jeebus and find it every bit as stupid as find Brother Squires calling Brother Kravitz Brother Kravitz on the Squire Board. I think this is the only board where members are cyber-murdered in their sleep, witness the recent demise of the popular Kay Bixler, and many internet wine lovers find the Bixler tale to be over the top, irresonsible and absurd. In fact, there is a new phrase being bandied about on the CompuServe wine board: "Bixleresque."
So, what to make of it all? The important thing is to stay close to the original mission statement:
"The Wine Asylum. The best place on the internet to discuss wine and other stuff."
I find that term a touching remembrance. Good for the CompuServers!Perhaps these Sguires folks are on to something, perhaps we here at the Asylum need a clubby salutation to show that we're all hearty chums.
Any ideas?
I think Nathan has done us all a great service by moving our focus from the 'Bixleresque' to Core Wine Discussions (CWDs). I'm afraid we are facing a credibility gap here at the Asylum and serious wine internet afficianados doubt everything that is written here. No one knows what to believe! Is Peter Finkelstein a real person? Is Kay Bixler? Is there a Pierre Overnoy and if there is does he produce a Vin Jaune? If someone drinks a Pierre Overnoy Vin Jaune in the silence of a deserted forest, does....
I note, for instance, that Jay Miller is not certain if the event being organized for Bize Leroy tomorrow at Café Loup is in fact a real event or not.
My guess is that calling each other Brother, Comrade, Confrérie, Esteemed Bixlerian Coad or Esteemed Bixlerian Dressner would only further stretch our credibility.
I sometimes try to plant a little CWD, only to see it wither and die of disinterest. People seem to delight in the wacky-persona/funny name thing for reasons that are unclear to me. Perhaps this is the wakeup call that we've needed.I hope you can clear things up for Jay. He deserves better.
I wish I could attend tomorrow, but I suspect it's all a prank of some kind. Nothing has seemed quite on the up-and-up since that peculiar hit-and-run death announcement.
I suspect that you're right about the honorifics only adding to the Loyal-Order-of-Water-Buffaloes atmosphere. The suggestion is withdrawn.
emptyish.
Hi Sue and Nathan-(I don't think anyone else has been here for a couple of days!)
I'm waiting for the Pinot Noir expose myself. I drank a glass of 1990 DRC Echezeax last night and it sure didn't remind me much of Bien Nacido! It was decadent, more decadent than any other wine I've had this side of the wines at our blind tasting a couple of weeks ago. I may never go back to the California Pinot again.
Sue, the Munich book fair sounded like fun but if I went I'd probably just look at the pictures, not reading German at all (I'm trying to improve my English too). All that gothic writing tires my eyes out. I am sorry to hear about the departure of Kay for a higher plane. I keep looking out for mentions about a balloon accident but all I've seen so far was a press release from the Napa Valley Wine Train Company talking about how much safer trains are than hot air balloons. Kay will be particularly missed because, unless I'm mistaken, The Wine Asuylum has the highest percentage of female participants of any of the online wine boards (I think that there's about four of us in all). We need to stick together to make the wineboards safe for women.
Hasta la bye-bye-
Eden
