I have just received word from Mrs. Shirley Bixler, that Kay Bixler and Dr. Arthur Shredgebill have died in a tragic ballooning accident over California's Napa Valley. I didn't get a lot of details regarding the exact circumstances that led to the fatal crash but apparently the balloon rapidly lost altitude at around 10:25 am today, lending new meaning to the term custom crush.Kay Bixler 33, had recently left her job as a bank teller in Hammondsport, NY and moved to New York City taking a job in the publishing industry. Ever optimistic, Kay will be remembered for her hardy laugh, her warm welcomes and a generous $50 contribution to the Wine Asylum.
Dr. Arthur Shredgebill 87, was an avid amateur balloonist and a lover of all of life's finer things. Ever caring, the Doctor was always here to offer sound wine related medical advice asking nothing in return and often following up with private e-mail consultations.
The couple were to be married on New Years Eve, 2000.
Both the Bixler and Shredgebill families have asked that no flowers or cards be sent. Anyone who wishes to express their sympathy can make a contribution to the Wine Asylum, the place that brought these two wonderful people together, in either Kay or Arthur's name.
This news has left me feeling shocked, empty, and confused. I will be taking an extended hiatus in an attempt to make some sense of it all.

I'm not sure if this is a serious post or a joke. I'm afraid the 'custom crush' quip makes me hope it isn't true. If it is indeed serious, my condolences go out to the families of all concerned. I'd never met the doctor, but Kay's a familiar face from the last few New York/New Jersey jeebuses. You're kidding, right?
Congrats! Your fellow Hawaiian did quite well. I was on the edge of my seat all night!cheers.

Last night there were reports of Kay and Arthur's death on several of the wine boards. This morning, these mentions have been deleted. We can only hope that this is yet another instance of an internet rumor -- a ghoulish one at that. One of the problems with the web as a new medium is that there is no fact-checking mechanism, as there is in traditional print publications. This brings to mind the incident this summer where another wine board had reports that I had fallen to a cardiac stroke and had been hospitalized in Mācon. It all turned out to be a misunderstanding that unfortunately appeared on the web.
I heard from Sue Ng in Germany this morning, who saw Mr. Scott's post and was totally shocked. Sue told me that she had spoken with Kay on Monday, Kay was house-sitting Sue's apartment, and Kay had not mentioned anything about a trip to California.
So, let's hope this all a rumor run amok.
This seems to be a rather morbid attempt at humor. There were similar announcements on other boards that were then deleted?
That probably speaks to the lack of evidence of any kind--there are no mentions of fatal ballooning accidents on any of the major online news sources, and you'd think that kind of thing would get a mention, wouldn't you?
Pardon my sudden emergence from the shadows, but I just spoke with Kay yesterday afternoon. I'm an old friend of hers from high school and a dabbler in wine and wine boards. Kay seemed quite alive as of 4:10 yesterday. She called from New York, not from California. I don't know what Andrew's up to here - whether he's passing on a morbid joke/rumor or whether he has the outcome correct (I hope not) and the circumstances wrong.Does anyone know Sue Ng's number? That's where she was staying in NY, apparently. I don't have the number. I called NY information and wasn't able to get the number.
I'm speechless. There is more coverage on the West Coast Wine board.
