I have just received word from Mrs. Shirley Bixler, that Kay Bixler and Dr. Arthur Shredgebill have died in a tragic ballooning accident over California's Napa Valley. I didn't get a lot of details regarding the exact circumstances that led to the fatal crash but apparently the balloon rapidly lost altitude at around 10:25 am today, lending new meaning to the term custom crush.Kay Bixler 33, had recently left her job as a bank teller in Hammondsport, NY and moved to New York City taking a job in the publishing industry. Ever optimistic, Kay will be remembered for her hardy laugh, her warm welcomes and a generous $50 contribution to the Wine Asylum.
Dr. Arthur Shredgebill 87, was an avid amateur balloonist and a lover of all of life's finer things. Ever caring, the Doctor was always here to offer sound wine related medical advice asking nothing in return and often following up with private e-mail consultations.
The couple were to be married on New Years Eve, 2000.
Both the Bixler and Shredgebill families have asked that no flowers or cards be sent. Anyone who wishes to express their sympathy can make a contribution to the Wine Asylum, the place that brought these two wonderful people together, in either Kay or Arthur's name.
This news has left me feeling shocked, empty, and confused. I will be taking an extended hiatus in an attempt to make some sense of it all.
