"The most surprsing was a roasside stand"
Maybe you've had almost enough. ;)
Roadside stands are often good, especially off the beaten path.
The best french fries I've ever had were at a little roadside stand in Auxerre, France.
I bought a nice red wine in Dolceaqua, Italy, at Cantina di Dolceaqua, where the owner took us on a tour of the vineyard and processing/storage/fermenting areas.
:)

...30 years ago we spent part of our honeymoon on the cote d' azur in France near the Italian border (Villefranche sur mer where my brother-in-law lived).
We would go to the local market and fill a bottle from a barrel with a spigot of red table wine there.
It was very cheap and always very good.
Local table wine in France or Italy usually beats most inexpensive wine here for some reason.
I think part of it has to do with the cuisine and wines evolved together in those areas.
I have acquired 3-4 bottled of the wine at this point, and and happily looking forward ot the right occasion!
