Having just got back from the Besilicata region of Italy for 2 weeks (nothing in the North, just Puglia, Besilicata, Calabria) ...I have a new favorite wine: the Aglianico del Vulture, and nearly anything from it. Red wine, with a depth, strength and character that makes me thing we've found the "right" red wine for us.
I have a set of pictures of the bottles we drank - of note was the "Paternoster" and "Manfredi" but of the 1-2 bottles we had from different wineries every day, we didn't find a bad bottle. The worst one, simply was a little too tight, and needed about a decade to unwind some. Most were simply marvelous. The most surprsing was a roasside stand with some crown capped "local stuff" we drank and used to cook some local sausage with sauce & pasta. Magical stuff (though this wasn't complex in the least).
They look like they are a little hard to get here in the US ... so I am looking. Anyone discovered these little gems?

Nothing adds to a wine like a beautiful view while on vacation.
Bisceglia Vulture 2009, $14. I'll try to pick up a bottle and let you know how I like it. Sounds interesting.
"The most surprsing was a roasside stand"
Maybe you've had almost enough. ;)
Roadside stands are often good, especially off the beaten path.
The best french fries I've ever had were at a little roadside stand in Auxerre, France.
I bought a nice red wine in Dolceaqua, Italy, at Cantina di Dolceaqua, where the owner took us on a tour of the vineyard and processing/storage/fermenting areas.
:)
...30 years ago we spent part of our honeymoon on the cote d' azur in France near the Italian border (Villefranche sur mer where my brother-in-law lived).
We would go to the local market and fill a bottle from a barrel with a spigot of red table wine there.
It was very cheap and always very good.
Local table wine in France or Italy usually beats most inexpensive wine here for some reason.
I think part of it has to do with the cuisine and wines evolved together in those areas.
I have acquired 3-4 bottled of the wine at this point, and and happily looking forward ot the right occasion!

As audiophiles, we take what's obsolete, make it beautiful, and keep it forever.
