...a friend of mine who is the banker for numerous wineries, including Cameron Hughes, says his Lot 200 cab @ $28 is supposed to be the best they've ever released.
If you aren't familiar with them, try Google or Costco.
Another friend has touted Poets Row cab @ $9 sold by Trader Joes.
The wine guy there told him it was as good as other cabs at 4 times the price.
I tried it and have to say it's fruity and balanced with no oak or tannins - a decent everyday drinker, but I think I can do better for $30.
Let me know what you think if you try them.
Follow Ups:
I've tried quite a few of the Cameron Hughes wines and find most of them friuty and lacking any depth. The wine table person in Costco always seems to imply that they're useing excess juice from a famous winery. Maybe they are, but they don't seem to be handling it the same as the famous winery.
Are you saying the Poets Row isn't worth $9 or it's not worth $30?
...in the past and found his wine ok at the low price - much as you describe.
But life's too short to drink cheap wine.
Maybe the Lot 200 will be better - I'm going to pick some up next week.
The demand for premium wine has fallen more with the economic downturn, so there is a good possibility it's quality stuff.
As for the Poets Row, it's well worth $8.99 - but not say, over $20.
My wine tasting group is going to do cabs under $30 next week, so I'll let you know how those two come out.
Throw a bottle of the '08 Indian Wells Cab in the mix and tell me how it does.

...2007 Columbia Valley Cab for $10.99.
Have you had it?
But it won't be as good as one of their "area" wines, such as Indian Wells.
Anyway, it was just a thought. I'm much more interested in what good wines your group can unearth. Always looking for a find.
By the way, the Bedrock Zin's are really good. If you can find it, the '08 Novy Russian River Valley Zin is excellent for the money.
