...recently tried these two. What a difference.
Alpha Omega Napa 2007 - $50 - 94 points WS ($40 internet)
This is simply a stunning chardonnay - complex flavors, lots of fruit and balance - everyone who tastes it raves about it. One of the best in recent memory.2008 Bernardus Monterey County - $24 - 92 points WS ($16 Costco)
This is a decent chardonnay but it has some off flavors so I'm surprised it rates more than the mid to high 80 point range. (I tried a few bottles.) Forget about it.2 point difference - night and day.
Says a lot about the value of ratings and WS is the only one I pay attention to.

One of the owners at Alpha-Omega and I started working at CNN in Atlanta within a week of each other in 1985 or 1986. He didn't stick around too long ($4.15/hr wasn't much of a livable wage even back then). Kind of nutty that we both ended up with wineries all these years later...even crazier is that his wife attended Whitman College located one block from my house here in Walla Walla.
BTW, I find wine reviews almost as meaningless as equipment reviews...they are only a starting point...sometimes not even that. I could tell you about the reviewer who asked that carmel corn be brought to him during his tasting in Washington recently......
...one of my favorite zinfandels of 2003, IIRC, was at the bottom of the big zin survey with 63 pts, the lowest score I've even seen.
But you have to have a guide and it's impossible to taste everything before you buy.
I'm with you. How can there be so much difference between a 92 and 94?
And then there are the bargain wines from Costco for $9 that get a 90 that don't taste anything like an excellent wine.
I did a search on Winespectator.com for the worst wines in their archives. The lowest scores ever were 50 with a review like "repulsive". What does a 48 taste like, much less a 5?
But I do use them alot because there is so much out there and I hate to spend hard earned cash on a winery I've never heard of.
I would hate to have their job...not!
...Rombauer Chardonnay 2008 and the WS rating is 92.
It needs ro be at least 93 points cause it's better than the Bernardus, but not quite at the level of the Alpha Omega.
