  Using Mahogany to build out a stem…? Don’t think it would be a real problem as long as it came from good straight grain stock. Mahogany is a softer wood than say red or white Oak -- but still dense enough to be stem material. It might be stronger yet if laminated to shape from the same stock - cut lengthwise in strips - bent to shape and glued with epoxy. Many of the Gunning Dories on the Eastern Coast of the USA were built using laminated Spruce stems. See John Gardner’s THE DORY BOOK for ideas on how to build a stem.

  Above is a new sharpie design from the board of Ian Oughtred in the tradition of Commodore Ralph M Munroe’s elegant 28’ EGRET first designed around 1880. HAIKU is 30’ LOA, Beam: 7’9”, Draft with boards up 12” (yup, 2 boards either side of the center bunks to open up the middle of the boat), Draft: with boards down 5’, Ballast Outside:1,000 lbs., Ballast Inside: 750 Lbs., Displacement: 4,300 Lbs., Sail Area: 337 Sq.Ft.
