I've never owned a boat and I am looking into getting a small to medium size boat. I have a few questions: I want a boat the will give me the option of going to a small lake or a big lake. Here in New Mexico the wind can get very bad and cause a lot of comotion in the water. I've read that a Jon Boat is not the best choice for this type of water. I would like to get a 12' or a 14' v-hull aluminum boat. Would this boat work good for both small and large lakes? How shallow is too shallow for these sizes of boats?

12 or 14 foot isnt much of a boat to go out in waters described by yourself as high wind and waves. Not saying it isnt possible, Just saying that is a small size for rough water. SMall boats also generaly use small motors, In wind and wave it can be a fight with a small boat. You definitly want a Vhull, and a wide one would be better ( stability ) I would go with aluminum. and I would not want one with shallow sides, maybe 2 foot in the back and 3 ta 4 in the front depending on modle
