I don't know about the 5000 but I think I would be looking at Nikon's next generation up, the Coolpix E5700.
My son-in-law likes the Canon G3, which I'm told is about the most popular of the digital cameras.

I've had a look at this site. Quite frankly, I need a camera that'll be 'good enough' to not be out of its depth before it breaks down and dies. But the digital world is so fast moving, that may not be possible.
As I mentioned to R B, I might be better of with one of the 'prosumer' devices, rather than a pseudo SLR. Whom am I trying to kid? I just want great shots of our children as they're growing up.
