what my image software (phtoshop 6 ) might do.I lightened and neutralized that green fog color also cropped out negative black space at bottom.Just one possibility,out of many. Also re-sized it to 5x7 inch at 96 resolution.That will aid in faster load times on the net.As only 72 - 96 dpi is needed on most monitors.You had 1x2 inch at 300 dpi. 300 is only used for printing it out on paper i.e. Epson 1280 or sending to an outside lab.
I own the Nikon 950 an older 2.1 MP.

what my image software (photoshop 6) could do here.First, I reduced the dpi from 1x2 inch at 300 dpi resolution, to 5x7 inch at 96 dpi. 300 is used for printing enlargements on paper i.e. Epson 1280 or to an outside lab.This 72 - 96 dpi
also loads faster on the net.It is the highest resolution on most monitors anyway.Second, I cropped out extraneous negative space.
Third, I cloned out the superfluous elements that detracted from that georgeous full flower.
and last color adjusted to pop that red out from the background, by subduing those green stalks and extra petals.Caused by straight on flash.
Just some things that can be done to hone an image for greater impact in a photo contest.In which would be very difficult to do with film & chemistry.
Get to know and love PHOTOSHOP........
Both shots look great!I have PhotoShop IV, that a buddy lent me a few years back and I have iPhoto Plus IV, which he likes/uses a lot (shoots air shows/Blue Angels) and which came with a scanner we both have.
I'll be installing them and fiddling this week.
