Which rangefinder 35 mm. cameras do professionals prefer: The Contax G-2 (or G-1) or the Leica M-7 or M-3, M-4, M-5, M-6 ?????

First of all I am NOT the person who used the rangefinder 35 mm camera as the tool of VOLUNTARY chose. Sometime doing journalistic work I used them with 24mm as “a low visibility and vow noise cameras” to “shoot from belly”. I feel that in many instances the photographers’ selection of the specific model of Contax/ Leica was dictated by the photographer’s personal paranoia then the specific technical demands. Pretty much the stunning optics and leaf shutter sets this class of cameras far apart form anything else and therefore they allow themselves to be way behind the “normal” set of demands exposed to cameras. Perhaps I am wrong but I really can’t see a photographer who would be able to say the s/he prefer M-6 to M-5 because it has a credible technical justifications. However, I have to admit that Contax always was more progressive, modern and more “smart” then Leica. I always loved the way they think.
M6 far easier to use with a variety of lenses as the rangefinder framing lines change to show the framing field of view of the lens. M5 has fixed framing lines and you sort of have to guess the actual framing - but, that can be fun too as you get some suprises (some good, some not so good).Pros would choose the M6 or M7 over the Contax unless it was in a "throw away" situation (you could lose the camera). Contax is a nice camera has good lenses doesn't have the "beef" that the Leica does to hold up in daily heavy use, and wider range of lenses available. Either will make wonderful pictures if the photographer can make wonderful pictures. Suggest the photographer is the weak point in the photo chain - not the camera.

Since I do a lot of photographing of art work, I got the Macro Elmarit-R 1:2.8 60mm lens. This is to replace my Contax 139 with a 50 mm 1:1.7 lens. Believe it or not, both of these carmera have the same size camera bodies (very compact). Leica's Macro lens does protrude quite a bit further then the Contax lens does, however. I have never been able to get used to automatic cameras, which is one reason I bought this one, strictly manual just like my Contax was. My first trial around the neighborhood proved that it will be easy to get used to.
