Okay gang, Superbowl has come and gone and along with it, the previously mnetioned magnum of '89 Krug. Having sat through both, let me say that the Krug handily eclipsed the game as the star of the show. What a sublime feast for the tastebuds. Definitely superior to the Grand Cuvee, this wine was saturated with toastiness and possessed a deep complex structure utterly devoid of any bitterness or harshness in the finish. It is very difficult to find a champagne that can be "chewed" in a langorous manner such as I did this one and not encounter any sour notes anywhere along the line. Although it could probably hold up well to another 20 years en boutille, it seemed to be well nigh approaching its peak and I would encourage any prospective imbibers to seek it out if finances allow and if there is a desire that burns to rub flutes with the very best that champagne has to offer in the here and now. If only it had been a jeroboam! Sigh.

Follow Ups:
Hang around here next week as my wife and I decided to drink the bottle of Krug we have for Valentines Day.

As a postscript to yesterdays ramblings let me again remind you to serve that Krug warmer than ususal, by which I mean no more than about 10 degrees below room temp. or risk numbing half of what it has to offer tastewise.

As Teddy Rossevelt used to say, "... a capitol idea...". Just resist the temptation to let any of the below-mentioned wine stewards from the Czech Republic get their grubby mitts on it first.Seriously, for the relatively neophyte champagne drinker who has had the occasional flute of Mumm's or Moet, the first flavor burst of this in the gullet may very well create doubt as to whether that's actually real bubbly because it will be so unlike what you'd expect based on previous experience. The full bodied richness and complexity so far exceeds the subtlety of the lower priced spreads that it's like going from a thin mass-market Chianti to a full-blown vintage of the century Super Tuscan. For those oh-so-few champagnes that offer this wonderful toasty, fungal, complex explosion in the mouth I employ the word "ennobled" to describe them as it's the best that I can come up with though, sadly, it doesn't really quite do justice in conveying to others what's going on in the mouth. In this regard, it's kinda like audio. ON one of those rare days when the stars have lined up just right and all the neighbors are gone with their computers and plasma screens shut off and the sound emanating from the speakers transcends the electronic to become real music, what words will properly describe that moment? Clarity, transparency, airiness, yadda yadda. Words fail us but you know it's the way it ought to be.
Anyway, sorry for the rant. I'll go crawl back in the cellar now. Please check in after VDay.

The first time I got to try a "premium" champagne we also purchased a bottle of "good" champagne just to see if the price was worth it.The two were DP '83 and Perrier Joet NV. It really helped you understand the difference.
And I KNOW that DP isn't the best. But it was given to me, and I was only 19.

I had planned to drink that other bottle of Krug with her, most likely on V-day after we have our anticipated lobster dinner. I have been turning her on to the likes of Piper, Duval, Cliquot, L.P., Tats, and Lil' Nicky but know she thinks they are all just as well. I will say she has noticed the difference a proper glass makes. Too bad she busted a Riedel (sp?) Vintage Champagne glass the other week while cleaning it :( Now I'm down to two...
We'll see you at S&J's this Sunday. I know what you'll be ordering! I had it last week when Elizabeth and I went there. Of course, that Calamari is still to die for :)
