You might take a look at the following url to get an idea of shipping regulations in general and what states are restricted ....http://www.freethegrapes.org/. I believe you have many choices I would do some checking with independent local shippers, wine stores that do internet sales, & Michigan wineries. I would also try the angle of contacting a shipper in the area you are shipping to and see if they have a good relationship with a Michigan shipping company. Most independent shippers use preferred forwarders(shippers) in the states they are shipping to for movement of their customers goods. I have done the UPS/FedEx route and I called the wine "plant extracts"....I wasn't untruthful........Make sure you have insurance.

I would say skip the insurance. It is just a waste of money.
Say they do break a bottle. After you file a claim they have to come and collect the broken pieces, the shipping container, and ALL of the original content (that's right, even the surviving bottles). Good luck ever getting the content back, even if the claim goes through (speaking from personal experience here (not with wine)).
If you said "Yes" to "Liquid, Fragile, or Perishable" they wouldn't have insured it anyway. So since you called it a "plant extract" they wont honor the insurance once they see what was inside.
Make sense?Self insure by packing very well. Assume the box will get tossed and dropped. Pack accordingly.
I think that most wineries that do direct-to-customer sales do not use shipping company insurance either. At least non of the ones I have spoken with.
...they figure out what's in the box. It's actually "don't ask, don't tell". Be sure to use a box with the styrofoam inserts to protect the bottles.

Each state has their own laws regarding shipping to and from.

http://www.wineinstitute.org/shipwine/index.htmI have had wine shipped directly to me using both UPS and FedEx.
I cannot imagine that you would have any problems shipping to California, it must be a Michigan state law?-Jeff
