...Lynch-Bages is a fifth growth of Pauillac in the Medoc, but the quality of wine it produces is on par with many 2nd growths. Typically ver tannic, long lived wine. 1998 an ok vintage in the Medoc, it was much better in the right bank (St.Emilion and Pomerol), but Lynch-Bages from even a so-so vintage should be quite good, and '98 is better than so-so. Monetary value? Maybe $50-60 depending on the retailer. All in all, a nice gesture. Try it with grilled strip steaks or rack of lamb.

thanks, it should be interesting to try it someday. Now, is this a wine that will get better with further aging? Or will it peak out, then just not be as good later?Chilled or room temp?
I've mostly been a German wine person, when I drink wine, spatlese that cost 10 to 15.00 a bottle 10-20 years ago. I haven't drank much though, the last 10-15 years or so really, only a few bottles in that period of time.
Wow, 50.00 bottle is a nice gesture.
It will get better with aging, probably another 5-7 years would be good, but don't bother unless you have a good place to keep it. A nice dark, dank, cool basement is ideal. Whatever you do don't keep it in the kitchen or anywhere else where it gets warm. Serve it at room temp. Enjoy!

Vegetable bin of refrigerator to cold? They are generally designed not to keep things as cold as the rest of the fridge. I have no basement, unfortunately, and no other area of the house is guaranteed not to go up as high as 78 degrees at some point during the summer. I could take it to my Parents basement, but I hate to do that, as I might forget about it. :)
I wouldn't put it in the fridge. Sad to say, I'd drink it as soon as it gets over 70 degrees, if there's really nowhere else to store it.A mature Bordeaux is so much better than a young one, though, it's a shame.
I have the same dilemma with a bottle of top-shelf Bordeaux that someone gave me for my birthday. It's a crime to drink it now.

oh no, that is a bummer. :( To bad the houses of today don't have an old root cellar like some of our Grandparents houses had.Well, I don't know what I will do then, maybe just drink it. :)
A Pauillac should be kept at least 10 years or so. Chateau Lynch Bages, I opened a bottle 1985 in 2001. Great ! Now i am keeping a 1995 bottle and dreaming happily.Drinking it now would be a shame and even perhaps give you a wrong opinion of Bordeaux wine. a 1998 Paulliac would be "en travail" (working ?) now with most of the great aromas completely "fermés" (closed).
If you open now,you will get an above average wine with a lingering "green, not ripe enough, fruit" taste. A feeling you get when eating a banana not ripe enough (just an analogy, it does not taste like banana :p )
A few tips
The fridge is excluded !
A real cellar is best but you can buy an electrical wine "cellar" for less than 1000€ (like a specialized wine fridge :p)Else, lying flat on a shelf in the living room, out of the sun and away from radiators etc, and wrapped in cloth. The wine will not achieve highest potential but it is ok. Note that if you have canicular heat, this option is not valid.
If you insist to drink it now, pour into a "carafe" (decanter), *2-3 hours* before serving at 20°c. The "Room temperature" legend referred to unheated room temp in pre-industrial France !
would only get to 20°C or more in the summer. In the summer, the French refrigerate (bottle opened) for 30, up to 60 or more minutes before serving, depending upon the heat.Never more than 18°C, and use the fridge if you're in hot climes.
as mentioned above, you keep it from getting too warm. where do you live? even if there's no basement, a lot of mild climates can work for storage for a little while, like a yr or so. put it in the most stable temp place you have. and don't forget to lay it down to keep the cork moist. i keep wine in boxes in the crawl space under my house. next to the dirt down there, it's cool, even when the outside temp is 100 degrees.

I'm in TN Stan. Thanks for the response. I don't like my house to hot in winter or summer, so it really may be just fine here in the cooler room.
