Can someone recommend some guides, books, or software programs with wine recommendations, particularly of Cabs, Bordeaux, Chilean reds, etc? I would particularly like to have something that would be small enough to take with me to our local wine outlet and that I could refer to conveniently in the store to get general guidelines on more commonly available reds. (In other words, it would be nice to have a small, abbreviated guide with some form of ratings of generally available reds, rather than a comprehensive wine encyclopedia describing thousands of wines in great detail.) Also, are there any small, hand-held computers (PDA's) with such programs?Or, for reference at home, is the Parker 6th edition wine book up-to-date (what's the publication date) and useful? Other suggestions?
Follow Ups:
Following up regarding the request for wine guidebooks that are small enough to carry and refer to conveniently in our local shop (i.e., answering my own question), I find that Hugh Johnson's "Pocket Wine Book", 2003, is helpful and small enough to carry and use conveniently. The Parker "Wine Buyer's Guide" is a more comprehensive, encyclopedic volume listing many wine choices, and it includes easy-to-use indexes.
Jim, I read parkers notes constantly. the wine updates is an ok reference guide. Personally, I prefer his bordeaux book which has notes on most bottles from each chateau dating back to '61. You can use a pda and get access to erobertparker.com which has notes on wines from around the world rated better than 85pts back to the '70 vintage if available. subscription is ~$100/year.
