Just as good as starting with half-bottles (375ml), if you can get smaller bottles to put the wine in so that it fills the bottle (500ml, 375ml, even other types of bottles such as cleaned medicine bottles), it will hold very well. I have had a half-bottle of wine with dinner, poured the remainder into a half-bottle to the top, corked it and put it back in the rack for months with no problems.

Try it! Remember the less contact with air, the better.
