In Reply to: Are Austrian wines available in the US? posted by Steve P. on December 16, 2002 at 16:07:05:
Hi Steve!I'm from Austria and I can tell you that Austria enjoyed it's best red wine vintage ever with the arrival of the 2000 (1999 and 1997, the latter yet hard to get by, as close seconds) red wines on the market last year. As they were produced in small qantities (at least by comparison to leading red wine countries) and are mostly sold in Austria and Germany, I think not many of them will find their way to the US. To start, here's a list of the best producers and their wines:
G.Heinrich: Salzberg, Gabarinza, Pannobile, Pinot Noir
Gesellmann: "G", Bela Rex, Opus Eximium
Pöckl: Reve de Jeunesse, Admiral, Rosso e Nero
E.Triebaumer: Blaufränkisch Mariental, Maulwurf, Cabernet/Merlot
Kollwentz: Steinzeiler, Cabernet Sauvignon
P. Achs: Pinot Noir, Pannobile
P. Kerschbaum: Imperator, Blaufränkisch Dürrau, Blaufränkisch Hochäcker
M. Kerschbaum: Blaufränkisch Reserve
Krutzler: PerwolffMaybe you even can import them directly via one the following online-
shops: www.weinco.at or www.weinwelt.at. They also have most of the famous dessert wines (Kracher, Feiler-Artinger) and white wines (Riesling and Veltliner from Knoll, F.X. Pichler, Hirtzberger, R.Pichler, Jamek, Alzinger, Nigl and Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay from Tement, Gross, Sattler, Polz, Sabathi, Neumeister, Lackner-Tinnacher) in stock.

Steve: Better late than never. I just saw your e-mail. I’ve been dealing with an importer here in the U.S. who puts out a newsletter highlighting the great Austrian and German wine estates. He is in Berkely, CA and will ship anywhere in the U.S. I’ve had GREAT success with him. He is a German speaker and travels there often for tastings and meeting the winemakers. Here is his e-mail address billmayer@sbcglobal.net, address Bill Mayer, 1813 Short St., Berkeley, CA 94702-1524, phone 510-549-2444, cell: 510-393-9282, fax: 510-549-2525. Newsletter is “The Age of Riesling”. Tell him I sent you if necessary and he should take care of you, I hope. Good luck. Jerry Bobnak
