According to Wine Spectator some 100 cases were imported to the US. But maybe they are long gone.
However, I just went to another wine store this weekend and asked about Wolf Blass wines. Much to my surprise and dismay, I was told, despite of his wonderful wines he is somewhat of a persona non grata in the US, because supposedly he is an old Nazi (which is a particularly sensitive subject in the Jewish neighborhood where this store was located and where I live).
In this case I would not buy any Wolf Blass wines, but does anybody have more info on that?
Blass is part owner of Beringer-Blass is the 3rd biggest wine company in the world and owns dozens of wineries around the world including Australia, Chile, New Zealand and several in California. You would have to quit drinking Beringer, Stag's Leap, Ch. St Jean., Souverain, Rosemount, many other wineries, not to mention Foster's Beer (Foster's owns Beringer-Blass)
Shouldn't make decisions whether to buy or not based on unsubstantiated rumors.Wolf Blass is indeed a German emigre. However, since he was born in 1934, and was therefore no more than 5 years old when WWII began and possibly 10 when the war ended, it seems very unlikely that he was a Nazi.
