Farther down I saw a post that referred to bringing one's own wine to a restaurant. I had no idea a restarurant would let you do this. Is this typical? Have I been unduly shy by failing to ask if I could do so?

This is becoming a more and more common occurance. Most restaurants will allow you to bring your own wine for a fee (corkage). The best way to approach this without offending anyone is: Call the restaurant in advance. Ask about the restaurants corkage policies. Talk about what you may be bringing in with the manager or sommelier. Definitely, do NOT bring something which is on the restaurants wine list. DO offer a taste to the manager, chef or sommelier. It is often fun to try something which is not on the regular list.
