I just got back from a San Francisco trip and spent a day touring Napa. I had just come from the tasting at Opus One and expected a let down. I was truly very pleasantly surprised with Grgich Hills.I thought all of their wines were excellent. I greatly prefered their '98 Cab to Mondavi's '98 Napa Reserve (both priced at $50). The real treat was the Grgich '94 Cab which was in another league. At $65 a bottle it is an amazing value -- it's a tough call if I would prefer it to the Opus One which sells for $150.
The grand total of all the tasting at Grgich, which included the glass was 5 dollars. I must mention that the 94 wasn't part of the standard tasting, but was offered after I got into a conversation with a nice woman there.
Follow Ups:
Amen to Grgich.Their Chard is in a league by itself. Cab is superb. But I feel their hidden secret is their Zin. Unreal value. I bought several cases of this many years ago for $10 per bottle. Still loving every drop.
Hard to beat Grgich for overall quality. My sources in Santa Rosa say that N. Cal wine prices are about to take a nosedive.
Cheers!
