headed to portugal. aside from port, which i more or less have figured out, can someone direct me to some particular area or wines? i have 3 nights in evora, another 3 near setabul, 3 up north in porto and near, then a week on the beaches in algarve. (sounds like fun 'eh? i'm dyin to leave!) so what is the scoop on the good wines not to be missed? everyday can be up to 10-15Euros; special can go higher; smuggle home up to 50E or so.... i read about the vinho verdes (spelling not for sure) and will try those. we like dry wines mostly, red or white. used to chianti classicos, riojas, malbec, NZ sav. blanc, most all california wines, and sparklings. just don't know portugal. thanks for any tips on locations or wines!

well, the trip is over. the wine was great. $10-15 or so bought you the good stuff on the menu, but fine wine available for less, and house wine in a ceramic jar was maybe $3-4/l and usually good. this is a country whose wine industry is moving from the old ways to modern tech. lot of fine wines there. the scenery was great, people very friendly, and the food was better than i got in italy frankly, for half the price or less. i brought back a few bottles, but now i have to find a steady supply in some store, or go back to portugal i suppose. darn.
Congrats on a wonderful trip. Usually Duoro, Alentejo, and Vinho Verde can be easily found at most fine wine shops. Personally, Vinho Verde is one of my favorite wines for summer drinking (try Soalheiro). To my tastes, I prefer the fruit balance in the alvarinho based wines to the more floral loureiho grape.
