I found that they are SAME trucks. With minor interior difference. Neither was recommended by the Consumer Report for Used Car and trucks. Or better to say grade was neutral. Six cyl. is strong but not so good in MPG. Four cyl. MPG was excellent but no power. The search is on...

  I wouldnt go by what consumer reports says anyway..They used to be fair in their analysis but being an automotive instructor I can safely say the ranger is a good choice..I like the 4.0liter OHC engine becuase it has lots of power and if you get late 90s or early 2000s truck you will be fine.Just keep the oil changed and the tranny flushed and you will be fine with the best selling compact truck of all time.

    Going Saturday to the public auction. If i find one what do you suggest for 'quick' visual test? I assume no driving test is available? Thanks for your post!

    Agree about the 4L as it is a tried and true, made in Germany engine (also used in the Mustang BTW). Have a 05 Ranger XLT with 4L engine and 4.10 LSD tranny. The Ranger is a mature design and appears to be very solid and reliable. As i recall, Consumer hated the possible roll over factor, but it is a truck with good ground clearance and that IS the purpose and not a race car. Parts for the Ranger are cheap enough as is servicing.
    The 4L XLT with 4.10 tranny can tow over 4,500 lbs and the bed itself can handle over 1,000 lbs., but i have loaded more than that for short trips.
    If you go with an upper line (over XLT) you get Blistein shocks and better LSD setup. Guess it all depends on how much 'truck' you need. As for price, MSRP was 26k and i got them down to 17k (am a brutal negotiator :) )

      that was reassuring. Ranger is the most affordable and knowing that is dependable will make a nice back-up for my 1988 Bmw 735i. I love that car!

        Always glad to help. My wife is has had a BMW since, well... since i do not want to give a hint to her age i will simply say she has had Bimmers since she was 20. From what i have learned through research, asking around, and surfing the web (see my previous post with topic as link) is that the Ranger is their 'service' truck. It is not an F-series so you can't haul a nice enclosed 3000 lbs 18 foot trailer with a race car inside (unfortunately), though if you get the 4L German-made engine and 4.10 LSD tranny it is a good setup.
        Guess it all really depends on HOW MUCH trust you need. For me, the old Honda Del Sol was not cutting it up here in Live Freeze & Die. He)), the Honda could not even make it up our DRIVEWAY last winter, but to be fair to the Honda the driveway is about 1/2-mile long and elevates about 800 with varying steep sections. Still, a 4x4 comes in VERY handy even during the summer and (heh heh) mud season (heh heh).
        The first week i had the truck i took it to a section of our property that is semi-cleared, semi-rough terrain and went at it in 4x4 mode :) Hey, it;s a 4x4 truck with good ground clearance :)
        Of course since then the truck has hauled TONS and TONS of brick, hardpack to repair the driveway, many trips totalling four chords of wood... Did i mention it is a truck.
        So yeah, guess i love the Ranger. FYI: My other car is the exact opposite, and after we get done lowering it to be a total of about 3 inches off the ground i may try driving under a parked 18-wheeler with it :)

        i've got a plain-jane '92 reg.cab, 2-wheel drv. 2.3ltr. 5-speed. it's refrigerator white, and i go totally unnoticed in traffic. gas isn't too bad. parts are usually cheap and plentiful. it's also very easy to fix, nothing very complicated here. i'm a Chevy guy, but i'll admit i love my lil' ranger.
