My wife currently uses an Olympus E500, and is looking to get a camera of equal or better quality that is more compact, but not one of those little credit card size point and shoot type. I'm a tube audio geek, but know almost nothing when it comes to cameras, so any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!

The dSLR market is dominated by Canon and Nikon. Sure there are several other brands manufacturing dSLRs, but they are all minor players compared to the two big boys - Canon and Nikon.
Try this website, my favorite site for professional camera reviews.
that I love. It's my first DSLR and I find it more convenient/cost-effective than film. Since I don't have AF lenses yet, I'm forced to use manual all the time which is something I never did with my film camera.
Great quality mirrorless 4/3 format camera starting at under $500. Panasonic also makes some great 4/3 format cameras.
Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Pentax all make conventional DSLRs that are fairly small. I'm partial to and happy with the Canon brand, as that is what I have experience with. They all work and take great photos. I suggest that you two visit a shop and try some of them to see what's most comfortable.
