Into my second month in Italy, mostly in Apulia and while I'm mostly drinking rose' and whites, I have had at least a few Primotivos (both Zin and Primotivo are clones from the same varietal).
From what I've read, Primotivo gets ripe earlier...maybe this is why it tastes so different. Not the typical CA fruit bomb, but way more restrained in style. One bottle I was drinking was 13% abv. Anyone remember a CA Zin under 15?
Style? Clone? Temperature? Trellising differences? Probably a little of each. But different for sure.
Follow Ups:
...is grown in CA and it tastes slightly different than zinfandel but is usually even more fruit forward and sweet.
Some of their Zins can be a bit more restrained and under 15%. But not by much. The 13% might just be close to impossible to find in CA.
Is the food any good over there?
The food is good but very similar all over the place. Lots of Calamari and Squid, and shrimp. Other types of fish...all quite fresh. The best calamari ever.
Lots of pizzas too. But I have yet to find any roman or tuscan food around.
Did see horse at the butcher shop today. Sure looks different.
