...started by Turley in the 1990s with their big bottles that don't fit into wine storage racks.
Then Disciples, now Conflict.
I'm sure there are others - maybe they think the heavier the bottle, the better you will think the wine is.
Follow Ups:
Justification. I have no idea what the wine costs you, but as prices creep higher I think a winery is trying to justify the purchase price.
The other thing in play is that most glass is now made in China so the cost to the winery is reasonably cheap compared to what it used to be if the bottles were being made in France.
Think of the extra materials to make that bottle, then the oil used to ship it from China to a WA or OR port, and trucking it to Eastern Wa, and then to you. Its really ridiculous.
...was dating an attractive woman a couple of years ago who owned a successful wine bottle supply company there.
I forget her name but I'd recognize her if I saw her.
She had an interesting take on the local vs the imported wine bottles and who was buying what.
The fat bottles don't fit my wine storage racks so I'm less likely to buy them, no matter how good the wine.
I make an exception for a few bottles of Turley each year.
