We went to a restaurant in Pacific Grove, Taste, tonight. I ordered a glass of Dow's Fine Tawny Port for dessert, $10. A glass the size of two thimbles, with maybe an ounce pour. Poured by what looked to be the mother of the family that ran the place. I signaled to the daughter that was the bartender and asked if this was really the correct pour. She said yes. Then the mother came out and asked why I was complaining, said I didn't know what that bottle cost her and a shot pour was correct. After a discussion/argument she said the glass was on her and refused to look at me the rest of the night as she passed and as she dropped off the check.
That is a $20 bottle retail at worst. She is getting it for probably $14 at worst. With her pours she's getting 25 glasses.
Follow Ups:
...the fancier the restaurant, the higher the wine seems to be marked up.
We just got back from Spain and the best thing about the trip was the wine prices. $16 bottle of wine on the menu and $3.50 for a glass. Most expensive glass was $5 for a $20 bottle.
Looks like very little markup.
So, it would be approx. 3 ounces.
She actually said it was a shot. A shot is 3/4 of an ounce. The glass was 2/3 full.
I posted on Yelp and they responded today. The husband/chef stated that they poured a 2 ounce and I didn't understand pricing.
I showed my Wife a 2 ounce pour this morning. Big laugh.
They compt the glass, so I wasn't cheated. But the service was rude afterward. Why not admit the error and offer an apology? I gave them props for the desserts and I might have revised my review, but not now.
I picked some up for the Holidays @ BevMo ($14) and it's unreal for the price.
