...6 of us blind tasted 6 grenaches. The one you like best is rated 1pt and the one you like least is 6pts - low pts wins.
6. 2013 Joel Gott (CA) $16 - 28pts - 2 lasts
5. 2011 Baronia del Monsant Flor d'englora (Spain) $13 - 25pts - 2 firsts, 3 lasts
4, 2014 Beckman Estate Santa Ynez Valley $19 - 24pts - 1 last
3. 2011 Shatter (France) $27 - 23 pts
2. 2014 Tres Picos (Spain) $16 - 14pts - 2 firsts (a WS "Best Buy" available at Trader Joe's) ) (my first)
1. 2014 Cypher "Drop Dead Legs" Paso Robles $55 - 13pts - 2 firsts (my second)
All were pretty drinkable - even the #6 which was just not very complex. The wines really changed over time except the first two which started out good and stayed that way. The point spread is interesting - #3 through #6 are close, then the drop to #1 and #2.
The bargain is the Tres Picos - highly recommended.
Follow Ups:
I'm not a big fan of Grenache on its own. I tend to favor GSM Rhone Valley blends. One Grenache (or Garnacha as it's called in Spain) that I tried three or four years ago was the Herencia Altes Garnatxa Negra from Spain. I don't recall the vintage, but I thought was very good. I think it currently sells for around $10 a bottle and is worth trying if you like this type of wine.
...but I would drink either of the first two - they were very good.
Next month we do GSM and Rhone blends.
