...although malbec seems to be growing in popularity, our group has done malbec tastings twice before and have been underwhelmed by the quality.
So we decided to have another go at it.
Six of us blind tasting six wines - low points wins.
6. 31pts - 2015 Elsa Bianchi $18 (my 3rd place)
5. 25pts - 2013 Catena $15 - 1 first
4. 22pts - 2012 Leo Mendoza $23 - 1 first
3. 20pts - 2014 Vina Cobos Felina $18
2. 19pts - 2013 Chacewater Kiev (Lake County. CA) $33 - 1 first (my last place)
1. 11pts - 2013 Brandlin (Cuvaison Napa) $40 - 3 firsts
The big winner was the Brandlin by points (note the gap).
Interesting the top two were from CA instead of Argentina. Overall these were pretty good and I wouldn't mind drinking any of them.
Follow Ups:
Next time throw in one from France where the grape originated. You'll be surprised by the difference in style
a nice match with grilled lamb shoulder steaks with roasted garlic/onion potatoes.
Forget the vineyard I liked, but do recall that it was 90-100% Malbec depending upon the vintage.
Tried a few CA versions in the 90's that were unclear on the subject (of Malbec).
...I realize the grape came originally from France, but everyone went for the easy picks I guess.
Never seen French malbec but haven't looked for it either.
