...to me once although I'm embarrassed to admit it.

Four of us were eating dinner at a fairly high end Italian restaurant with a wine bar downtown.

We ordered a $50 bottle of wine. When it was gone we asked the waiter for a recommendation for a second.

He said I have one I think you'll like and brought it to us.

It was pretty good but nothing special.

When the check came the second wine bottle was $200.

My Wife and I and another couple went out to hear some local musicians. Afterwards we went to a nice bar for a nightcap and the two musicians were there. We got into a conversation with them and my friend offered to buy them a round of tequila. The bartender recommended one and poured. Turned out to be $50 a shot.

Very uncool.

  Asking the restaurant staff for a recommendation is a bit like handing them your wallet and telling them to take what they want. Yet, people do it. Maybe it's a "prestige" thing psychologically motivated to impress their dinner partners or other people, kind of like flaunting a bunch of credit cards while looking for the "right one" to make people think you're well-off, even though all of those retailer-based cards are free.
  
  I've asked for a wine "flight" recommendation, and then follow up with: "How much is that?" I don't need to spend no $50 for five half-glasses of wine! Too many people are too insecure/intimidated to ask the price. Then they get burned.

    ...it always irritates me in a fancy restaurant when the waiter recites the food specials of the day without the prices.
    
    I always ask if one interests me.
    
    And I've learned to do that with the wine, too.

    It seems 9 times out of 10 when I order off a wine list they don't have my first request. So if the waiter suggests an alternative I ask if it is the same price.
    
    I always give a price range when asking for a recommendation.
