Back in the 90s, we drank a fair amount of Bordeaux 1980s wine (notably 1982 and 85). This past weekend, I decided to have a Ch. Larose-Trintaudon Haut-Medoc, 2006, with the ribeye roast I made on the grill. The brand had been one of our favorite less-pricey wines back in the day. It was $16.99 this past Saturday.My "cooking wine" was a Gallo C.S. which I bought for $4.34. ("Cooking wine" is what you drink while the meat is on the grill.)
I'm tellin' ya what, the Ch. L.T. was a LITTLE better than the Gallo, but certainly not $13 better.
(Edit: btw, the ribeye was excellent.)

...here's a suggestion - try the Rosenblum Vintner's Cuvee zinfandel for around $7 a bottle.Then you can use it for both.
Just because it has a French name doesn't mean it's not swill.
