...my wine tasting group did meritages tonight - 6 of us.
I wouldn't recommend any except the winner since none were very good. It was difficult to rank them.
The winner was a Reynolds cab/syrah blend that wasn't a meritage.
6 - 28pts -Beringer Knight's Valley 2010 $20
5 - 28pts -Franciscan Magnificat 2007 $35
4 - 27pts -Cameron Hughes Lot 325 2010 $13
3 - 23pts -Estancia Paso Robles 2009 $20
2 - 11pts -Dry Creek Mariner 2007 $40
1 - 9pts - Reynolds Walkabout NV $35
Follow Ups:
A friend of ours thinks the Estancia is the ultimate find, but I agree with your palate.
I've also had the Berringer and Franciscan and they seemd on the sumple side.
Now I'm trying to think of the best meritage under 40 bucks.

...but occasionally I taste a good one and pick it up.
We were in Calistoga a couple of months ago and went to Bennet Lane where I tasted and bought a bottle of their Maximus for $35. The latest WS just gave it 88 pts.
In years past I've liked Chateau St. Jean's Cinc Cepages - I may have just seen it at Costco - but it lists for $75 now.
We went by their tasting room last summer. Very underwhelming. It was the first stop of the day as it was the first we came to on the Siverado Trail.
Everything tasted a little over ripe. Just on a hunch I asked if the owner was his own winemaker. He was.
...about Reynolds from your Napa trip last summer.
One of my friends in the wine group thinks they make terrific wines and that he's discovered a real unknown gem.
One of their cabs came in second in a cab tasting a few months ago and I thought this one was head and shoulders above the others in the meritage tasting.
that day.
But my daughter, who has a good palate, was in total agreement with me.
