I usually go on the recomendations of people at TJs.
Lately it's been Trentatre $6 and 1967 $5. Once in a while I try a $10 or $15 bottle but always go back to the less expensive ones (on recomendation).
I don't know much about wines so I'm better off starting with the cheaper stuff. There's lots of good ones under $10.
Follow Ups:
...one of the guys in our wine tasting group made friends with the wine buyer at the local TJs who advises him on some of the best values.
They usually score pretty high in the tastings and a $12 Liberte Cabernet won the under $30 cabernet tasting last year.
Next, ya gotta head to one of those free tastings at the local wine specialty shop and see if you get hooked on their stuff!
Cheers!

Especially if they have a vineyard rep. pouring. Good way to get some incite into the wine world.
