...is tasting Syrahs.
Any easy to find recommendations?

I'm looking forward to. Not sure how available. May be one my wife picked up at the winery in Paso Robles. I also have a Holly's Hill I just bought after tasting it. I think it's one of their better wines. (cool little hole in the woods winery, too, with great views.) They specialize in Rhone varieties.

You could find my 2007 Walla Walla Syrah at K&L (they may have to order it, but I know my distributor in CA has some.) It made a recent top 100 list somewhere for what it's worth. A little easier to find from some of the same vineyard sources would be Amavi Syrah Walla Walla. Gramercy also of Walla Walla has been getting some nice write ups..probably also available in the bay area.
Not a great fan of the way California uses the Syrah grape, but that is my problem. I have been enjoying some Novy Russian River Syrah's lately but they still wouldn't be my go to wine.
On the other hand, why don't you mix it up and throw in a bagged bottle of a French Hermitage and an Austalian Shiraz.

See if you can find one of the Molly Dooker wines. Big ol' ripe Shiraz.
You should really try to find a Hermitage or a Croze-Hermitage just for the comparison.
