..."Oh Lord, stuck in...."
They are growing a lot of zinfandel and a number of new wineries have popped up there.
I had no idea how many until I got a wine map at the Visitor's Center - there are now 37 wineries in the small rural town of Lodi, off of Hiway 99.
Adjacent to the Visitor's Center is the Wine and Roses Hotel and Spa that reminds me a little of the Sonoma Mission Inn and Spa. A one hour massage is $125 - rivaling prices in Sonoma.
We stopped at a few of the wineries and tasted - many were pretty rustic.
Some of the better zins were going for $28 to $42 which seemed a little pricey for a Lodi appellation.
Guess I've become a wine snob.
Or my cellar is little overstocked right now.
Follow Ups:
Along with Amador and Russian River Valley, Lodi is one of my favorite wine regions in CACheck out Macchia's "Mischievous" Zinfandel (and their "Bodacious" Petite Syrah from Amador).

Was in a Vino Volo at the Sacto Airport and they were pouring the Michael David Winery's "Rapture" cab blend and it was strikingly fabulous!
Took a bottle home for a tasting and nobody guessed Lodi.
Lots of fun wine from down around there.
Many zin makers feel they are getting screwed due to lack of "birth certificates" for many wineries - - old field blend vineyards make it tough for grapes that have been handled like a zin, grown like a zin, and often thought of as a zin - to be called a zin!
According to the wine powers in Cali, President Obama can only be called a meritage blend.
:D

I remember Amador County being a player in zins back in the early 80's. Like Lodi, they seem to have fallen off the map.
As for the prices, maybe they figure if you match the big boys in price the average tourist will assume they are worth it. Nothing like a vacationer to over pay and over praise a wine.
...Amador is still there producing some good zins.
I have a friend who likes the Gold Country and that's his favorite wine destination.
The other hot wine now area is Paso Robles.
