...and how much time you have.
If you go the fastest route down 101 through Gilroy, you'll miss most of the wineries.
However if you take 17 through Los Gatos and Santa Cruz, there are numerous ones to sample, but most are up in the mountains. Just Google "Santa Cruz wineries".
Probably my favorite is Ridge in the hills above Los Gatos.
You'd probably do better to find a good wine shop in Carmel or Monterey.
Follow Ups:
Years ago we took a scenic drive from Saratoga, thru Santa Cruz, then into Monterey. Winding road thru the redwoods, really beautiful.
Can't remember what road it was, either 9 or 17. I think it was where the main drive thru Saratoga headed west and up into the mountains.

I just email them a reservation request last night.
Went there years ago and loved it.
...there are now tasting rooms for 5 or 6 wineries off of Mission (hiway 1) on Swift St. (on the west side of town) including Bonny Doon which has a nice restaraunt in their tasting room.
Pelican Ranch there has a nice inexpensive chardonnay.
Much easier tasting here than driving around in the mountains. We have a weekend place on that side of town.
There is also a terrific wine bar/restaraunt in downtown Santa Cruz -Soif - and another one upstairs on the Municipal Wharf next to the Boardwalk.
We did a "Day in the Vinyards" at Ridge maybe 10 or 15 years ago. Spent about an hour cutting grapes off of the vines, then retired to an outdoor picnic lunch with all the wine we could drink. Their Lytton Springs zin is one of my favorites.
Another one whose wine I've been impressed with in the past is Soquel Vineyards, just south of Santa Cruz on your way to Carmel.
Weekend of Sept. 12-13 is the Capitola Art and Wine Festival, just a little further south.
There is an Armida Winery tasting room in downtown Capitola, which is worth a walk around.
We're coming in on Sept. 22nd and leaving on the 27th. Anything good going on during that time?
...kids are all back in school so summer stuff has ended.
September is my favorite month down there - weather should be great.
You might try the Monterey Aquarium - it's pretty spectacular.
