I'm also starting to get tired of the fruit bombs. I blame Australia. I recently had a Reynolds Family meritage. I always associate meritage in more of the Bourdeax style, not just the blending leeway. This was a big ol' bomb too.
On a different note. Do you grow your own grapes or do you purchase?
I'm also starting to get some purchase options from some of the wine clubs I belong to. How was '08 in California? Especially Sonoma pinot noir. I've really enjoyed the '07 wines.
Follow Ups:
who keep giving them high scores. Lots of wineries make wines to get high scores because that's what moves the wine. If reviewers changed so would the wines.
I don't grow my own grapes for a couple of reasons. Having a vineyard is a money hole...I can't afford to tie up my capital with establishing a vineyard. (I am not a rich man, especially not now!)
I get my grapes from different climates...I rarely buy Syrah and Cabernet from the same area, same goes for Riesling, etc...this gives me way more options. I routinely travel 2 hours away from here to find grapes...why limit yourself to one climate if you don't have to? Growing grapes is a hard thing to master. Some day I'll work on it, but for now I leave it to the farmers with a proven track record.
Not sure about 2008....I seem to remember some early frost problems in CA, but not sure exactly where...and then there were fires. I know I've seen some emails from labs in CA talking about smokey flavors in the 2008's and how to deal with them.
I've noticed that some wineries that ship out of state to me charge me my state's sales tax. Others don't. What gives?
It depends how good you are at following rules I guess..everyone should be collecting sales tax to be paid to your state...in practice, smaller places don't have the manpower to deal with it. If you are a large winery you can't afford to get in trouble maybe.
