I had read somewhere that if you don't buy your allotments that they either drop you and/or don't allow you access to their more sought after wines.
With my first allotment form, I was given 3 Juvenile, 2 Old Vines, and 1 of 7 other wines (Meade, Duarte, Rattlesnake, etc.). Alot of the wines on the list weren't offered to me.
Follow Ups:
...I get offered each year, and I've been on their list for at least 8 years.
I usually balk at the ones over about $45 so they don't offer them to me anymore.
If you buy the more expensive ones, perhaps they'll allocate you more of the higher priced wines next time.
The Old Vines are usually pretty good, especially at the price, but without the complexity and character you get from the single vinyards.
I recently had a 2004 Dragon Vinyard - pretty descriptive, with a lot of heat and spice but little fruit.
I don't see myself paying north of $45 for a zin.
I had the Old Vines tonight. Smooth, jammy, and a bit of the zin bramble going on.
The Four Vines Biker was similar and cheaper.
...can be bought in wine shops and doesn't have the Turley exclusivity cache'.
Originally, some years back, Turley wines was begun by Helen Turley, a legend in California winemaking. She does some consulting and owns Marcassin, who produces highly rated, expensive, nearly unobtainable pinot noirs.
Her brother, Larry, a surgeon, took over the winery maybe 6 or 7 years ago and then after a they bought another winery in the Paso Robles area a couple of years ago, moved most of the operations there.
While some of their wines are pretty good these days, I have the impression they may be a little over-rated and over-priced these days.
I have a wine cartoon which always makes me chuckle. A guy is in a shop tasting some wine. He says, "This wine tastes like swill". The owner says, "The Wine Observer gave it 93 points". His response, "I'll take a case."
A shop owner told me this story. He recommended a wine to a customer who bought a case only to return 11 bottles the next week and ask for his money back because he didn't care for the wine.
The shop owner obliges and a week later the wine gets a very good score somewhere. Of course the guy comes back to the shop demanding his wine back! And of course it had been sold again.
Lemmings.
