I used to notice it in Australian syrahs back in the early 80's and I just noticed it in a Novy syrah tonight.
Kind of a rubber tire flavor. Like the smell when you go into a tire store.
And the Novy was well reviewed by WS.

There are a number of variations of this aroma. It's often called the "rubber boot aroma" and was common in some Lois Martini reds around 40 years ago. It is often caused by the presence of a specific bacterium and can be avoided rather simply by good cellar practices. It is considered a fault rather than a feature. I happen to dislike it intensely.

I haven't noticed that trait but I did have a really bad California Cab recently that reminded me of transmission fluid. After the first glass the rest went down the drain...
