...a friend brought over a bottle of Venta Mazzaron 2005 Tempranillo - under $15 at Costco.
Surprisingly good.
Follow Ups:
I enjoy wine sufficiently to drink a glass or two every day. In my collection I do have some very nice albeit modest bottles.
However, I have been impressed with the "cube" wines at Target, particularly the whites but the reds are still very drinkable. At a recent sale, I purchased a half dozen 3 litre boxes at $16/each.
When giving dinner parties, I like to serve wines by carafe only. It precludes one's prejudging what they are being offered. Perhaps devilishly I enjoy mixing the selection, including an occasional Target box variety with selections costing a great deal more. So far, the whites have received very good reviews. Personally I find cheaper reds more difficult to mask as something other than what they are but for a glass of wine with lunch the Target reds are good and the box format keeps them much longer than one would expect from an opened bottle.

...is another source for good inexpensive wines. In store selection is more extensive and interesting than what is shown on their website and you can usually find some good quality bargains.
...the young guy who was the wine buyer then at a party.Told me some intersting stories about wine tasting and buying.
He has since moved on and bought his own wine shop/restaraunt on Solano Ave. in Berkeley.
Cost Plus does have an intersting selection and their Veuve Cliquot and Gloria Ferrer champagnes (two of my favorites) were the cheapest I could find.
Until Costco started carrying them.

They get a lot of highly praised wines and sell them at very reasonable prices.
Here in Houston we have three stores. I've found that the two in the wealthier areas have a larger selection.
...the largest wine retailer in the country.
IIRC, their wine buyer used to be the wine buyer for Liquor Barn.
They get some great stuff at some pretty good prices. My friend who brought the Tempranillo over tries just about anything they have at under $15.
The problem is that when I buy stuff there to try, if I don't get back to buy it again within a few weeks, it could be all gone.
When they had a few of the better 2005 Bourdeaux's I bought a bottle of one of the lesser priced ones and went home to look it up on Wine Spectator. The one I got was highly rated so I went back the next day to get a couple of more bottles. Gone.
